7th Grade Waves Vocabulary

Vocabulary Word Definition
Wave A disturbance that moves through matter or space. They carry energy from one place to another
Transverse Wave Causes particles in matter to move in right angles to the direction the wave travels. (Mechanical Wave)
Compressional Wave Causes particles in matter to move back and forth along the same direction in which the wave travels. (Mechanical Wave)
Wavelength The distance between one point on a wave and the nearest point moving with the same speed and direction.
Frequency The number of wavelengths that pass by a given point each second.
Law of Reflection States that the angle the incoming wave makes with the normal to the reflecting surface equals the angle the reflected wave make with the surface
Refraction The change in direction of a wave when it changes speed as it travels from one material to another.
Diffraction Bending of waves around an object
Mechanical Wave Needs matter
ie. earthquake, tsunami(water), sound
Electromagnetic Wave No matter needed
ie. light, heat
Opaque No light pass through them
Translucent Allowing some light through but it is not clear
Transparent Allowing all light to pass through
Reflect The process of light striking an object and bouncing back
Absorb take in
Transmit cause something to pass on from one place to another
Pitch the degree of highness or lowness of tone
Loudness producing or capable of producing much noise, easily audible
Echolocation the location of objects by reflected sounds
Echo a sound or series of sounds caused by the reflection of sound waves from as surface back to the listener
Doppler Effect an increase or decrease in the frequency of sound, light, or other waves as the source and observer move toward or away from each other.
