Describing Matter Part II

Question Answer
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space (volume)
Physical Properties The characteristics of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the substance
Mass The measure of the amount of matter in an object
Weight The measure of the gravitational force acting on an object. The more gravity the more an object weighs. The less the gravity the less the object weighs
Volume Amount of space an object takes up; measured in liters or cubic centimeters. The formula for calculating the volume of a rectangular object is Length?Width?Height.
Balance A tool used to measure the mass of an object in grams (g)
Spring Scale A tool to measure force, such as the weight of an object in Newtons (N)
Graduated Cylinder A tool used to measure the volume of an object in milliliters (ml)
Density The amount of material (mass) an object has in a specific amount of space (volume). The formula for calculating density is Density
Thermometer A tool used to measure temperature
Ruler A tool used to measure length
Milliliter Metric unit for measuring volume
Gram Metric unit for measuring mass
Newton Metric unit for measuring a force such as weight.
Celsius Metric unit for measuring temperature
Centimeter Metric uit for measuring length
