Term Definition
pressure The force pushing on a surface divided by the area of that surface.
Boyle's Law A principle that describes the relationship between the pressure and the volume of a gas at a constant temperature.
Charle's Law A principle that describes the relationship between the temperature and volume of a gas at a constant pressure.
Nucleus The central core of an atom containing protons and usually neutrons.
Atom The basic particle from which all elements are made.
Electron A tiny, negatively charged particle that moves around the nucleus of an atom.
Mass number The sum of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom.
Proton A small, positively charged particle in the nucleus of an atom.
Atomic Number The number of protons in the in the nucleus of an atom.
Model A diagram, a mental picture, a mathematical statement, or an object that helps explain ideas about the natural world.
Neutron A small particle in the nucleus of the atom, with no electrical charge.
Isotope An atom with the same number of protons and a different number of neutrons from other atoms of the same element
Atomic Mass The average mass of all the isotopes of an element.
Periodic Table A chart of the elements showing the repeating pattern of their properties.
Period A horizontal row of elements in the periodic table.
Group Elements in the same vertical column of the periodic table; also called family.
Chemical Symbol A one or two letter representation of an element.
Alkali Metal An element in Group 1 of the periodic table.
Alkaline Earth Metal An element in Group 2 of the periodic table.
Halogen An element found in Group 17 of the periodic table.
Noble Gas An element in Group 18 of the periodic table.
Metalloid An element that has some characteristics of both metals and nonmetals.
Transition Metals One of the metals in Groups 3 through 12 of the periodic Table.
