# Properties of Matter

Term Definition
Physical Property a property that can be observed, measured, or changed without changing what the object is made of
Measuring developing and using appropriate units of measurement for length, area, mass, volume, time, weight and temperature
Matter anything that has mass and takes up space
Mass the amount of matter in an object
Meter a metric unit to measure length (height from the floor to a doorknob)
Millimeter a metric unit to measure length (1,000 mm = 1 m) (the width of a pencil lead)
Centimeter a metric unit to measure length (100 cm = 1 m) (th e width of a little finger)
Decimeter a metric unit to measure length (10 dm = 1 m) (length of a new crayon)
Kilometer a metric unit to measure length (1,000 m = 1 km) (distance from school to the grocery store)
Gram a metric unit to measure mass (mass of a large paper clip)
Kilogram a metric unit to measure mass (1,000 g = 1 kg) (mass of a textbook)
Volume amount of space that matter takes up
Capacity the maximum volume of a container
Liter a metric unit to measure volume (volume of liquid in half of a large soda bottle)
Milliliter a metric unit to measure volume (1,000 mL = 1 L) (volume of liquid in 2-3 water drops
Displacement method for finding volume of objects with irregular shapes (such as a rock)
Magnetism the pushing or pulling force between the poles of magnets
Sink an object falls to the bottom in water
Float an object sits on top of water
Solid matter that has a definite shape and takes up a definite amount of space
Liquid matter that takes the shape of its container and takes up a definite amount of space
Gas matter that has no definite shape and takes up no definite amount of space
Temperature the measure of the warmth or coldness of an object
Celsius a metric unit to measure temperature
Evaporation the process of changing a liquid into a gas
Condensation the process of changing a gas into a liquid
Mixture a combination of two or more different kinds of matter, each of which keeps its own physical properties
Solution a mixture in which the particles of different kinds of matter are mixed evenly with each other
Dissolve to make a solution of, such as salt in water
Solubility a measure of the amount of a material that will dissolve in another material
Salinity the amount of salt dissolved in water
