Term Definition
Anatomy The study of internal and external and the physical relationships among body parts.
Physiology The study of how living organisms perform their vital functions.
Homeostasis The existence of a stable internal environment.
Autoregulation Ability of an organ to maintain a constant blood flow despite changes in insertion.
Extrinsic Regulation Homeostatic regulation which results from the activities of the nervous or endocrine system.
Receptor Monitors the value of a variable (blood pressure)
Control Center Establishes set point around which variable is maintained
Effector Can change the value of a varibale
Negative Feedback Helps maintain homeostasis and maintains variation within normal range.
Positive Feedback Is not homeostasis. When deviation from normal value, the system responds by making the deviation even greater.
Anatomical Position A person standing erect with feet forward, arms hanging at sides, & palms of hands facing forward.
Cranial Of or relating to the skull or cranium
Posterior In back lateral, away from midline
Anterior In front of
Caudal tail
Dorsal In back lateral, away from midline
Ventral In front of
Superior Above
Proximal Closer to trunk
Medial Closer to midline
Lateral Away from midline
Distal Away from trunk
Inferior Below
Frontal Plane or Coronal Plane: Vertically from right to left & divides body into anterior and posterior parts
Transverse Plane or Horizontal Plane: Parallel to the surface of the ground & divides the body into superior & inferior parts.
Sagital Plane Vertically through body, separating it into left & right sides/parts
