A Bit More Information.Lavender (Lavandula officinalis)

Constituents: Flower contains up to1.5% volitile oil containing: linabol, linalyl acetate, lavendulyl acetate, terpinenol, camphor, borneol, pinene, linalol, geraniol, cineole, limonene and sesquiterpens. It also contains tannins and coumarins.

Actions: Carminative, anti-spasmodic, anti-depressant, rubefacient, anti-emetic, nervine, anti-septic, anti-fungal, & sedative.

Parts used: Aerial parts

– Decorative:
Whole plant – excellent garden plant, as hedging plants.
Flower – dried bunches hung or added to dried arrangement or wreaths. fresh, add to nosegays

– Culinary
Flower – use to flavour jams and jellies or make lavender vinegar. Crystallized as decoration on cakes and confections.
Leaf – as part of the Herbs of Provence.

– Household
Flower – dried in sachets, bundles and wands to scent linen closets, and draws to protect items from moths. Rub fresh onto skin or pin to clothes to discourage flies.
Stems – can be used dried as incense or added to potpourri and herb pillows.
Oil – added to final rinse of linens

– Cosmetic
Flower – makes tonic or flower water for delicate or sensitive skin to speed cell replacement. As an astringent in treating acne. In soaps, bath oils and powders.
Oil – to treat acne, dandruff, andadded to rinse water for scented hair.

– Medicinal
Infusion – soothe headaches, calm nerves, ease flatulence, fainting, dizziness, stomach upsets and halitosis.
Oil – topically to treat abscesses, acne, athlete’s foot, boils, bruises, burns, dermatitis, eczema, earaches, lice, psoriasis, ringworm, scabies, sunburn and wounds, insect bites & stings, small burns. Added to bath water to calm nerves, induce restful sleep, and calm restless children. Used in massage for muscular aches, fluid retention, cellulite, skin sores, and rheumatic aches.
